India runs one of the world's largest living-donor transplant programmes. For international patients the medical pathway is well established, but the legal and documentation pathway is where cases are most often delayed.

Indian law permits transplantation from a near relative, and for foreign nationals the donor relationship must be certified by the embassy or the competent authority in your home country and cleared by the hospital's authorisation committee. Start those documents before you fly.

Liver & Kidney Transplant in India — frequently asked questions

Who can legally donate?

Under Indian law a near relative — spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild — with the relationship certified by your embassy or home-country authority and approved by the hospital's authorisation committee.

How long is the total stay?

Realistically eight to fourteen weeks for a liver transplant and eight to twelve for a kidney, because the outpatient monitoring period after discharge is as important as the surgery itself.

What happens to the donor?

The donor is admitted, operated and followed as a patient in their own right. Their hospital care is included in the transplant package and the donor's fitness can veto the procedure at any stage.
