Knee Replacement in India: Cost, Implant Choices and Recovery
· 8 min read · Orthopaedics

Knee replacement is the procedure where implant choice, not surgeon fee, drives the price difference between two quotes. Two hospitals can quote 40 percent apart for the same operation simply because one assumed a cobalt-chrome implant and the other an oxidised zirconium one.
Cost by implant and approach
Implant grade is the main lever. Higher-cost bearings are usually recommended for younger, more active patients where expected implant lifetime matters most; for a patient in their seventies the standard option is frequently the clinically sensible one.
| Option | Typical cost (USD) | Hospital stay | Usually recommended for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single knee, cemented cobalt-chrome implant | 4,200 – 6,000 | 5 – 7 days | Most patients over 60 with standard activity levels |
| Single knee, high-flexion or oxidised zirconium | 5,500 – 7,500 | 5 – 7 days | Younger or more active patients, implant longevity priority |
| Robotic-assisted single knee | 6,500 – 9,000 | 5 – 7 days | Complex deformity or where alignment precision is prioritised |
| Bilateral (both knees, one admission) | 7,500 – 10,500 | 7 – 10 days | Both knees worn, cardiac and haemoglobin fitness confirmed |
| Revision knee replacement | 8,000 – 13,000 | 7 – 12 days | Failed or loosened previous implant |
Single or both knees on one trip?
Bilateral replacement in one admission saves a second set of flights, a second visa cycle and a second recovery period, and hospitals price the second knee at a discount because theatre and admission overheads are shared.
It is not right for everyone. Simultaneous bilateral surgery places more strain on the heart and lungs and needs more transfusion support, so surgeons screen carefully for cardiac fitness, haemoglobin and BMI before offering it. Ask specifically why the recommendation was made for you.
What the package usually covers
A standard arthroplasty package at an accredited Indian hospital includes:
- Surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre charges
- The named implant and consumables
- Three to five ward days with routine investigations
- In-hospital physiotherapy from day one after surgery
- One post-discharge orthopaedic review
The recovery and physiotherapy timeline
Rehabilitation, not surgery, determines your result. Indian hospitals start you walking with support the day after the operation, and the outpatient physiotherapy weeks are what your travel budget really needs to cover.
| Stage | Mobility milestone | Physiotherapy | Travel status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Standing with support the same evening in most cases | Ankle pumps, breathing exercises | In hospital |
| Day 1 – 4 | Walking with a frame, knee bend to about 90 degrees | Twice daily supervised sessions | In hospital |
| Day 5 – 7 | Corridor walking and a few stairs safely | Discharge assessment | Discharged to local accommodation |
| Day 8 – 14 | Walking with a stick indoors | Outpatient physiotherapy 4 – 5 days a week | Suture removal around day 12 – 14 |
| Day 15 – 21 | Longer walks, stairs with confidence | Home programme handed over in writing | Fitness-to-fly review, then flight home |
| Month 2 – 3 | Most patients walk unaided | Continue home exercises | Back to normal travel |
Questions to ask before you accept a quote
These five questions turn two incomparable PDFs into a fair comparison.
- Which implant brand, material and bearing does this price assume?
- Is the quote for a conventional, computer-navigated or robotic-assisted procedure?
- How many ward days are included, and what is the per-day rate beyond them?
- How many of these procedures does the named surgeon perform each year?
- Is outpatient physiotherapy after discharge included, and for how many sessions?
How we support an orthopaedic case
We collect your X-rays and reports, obtain written estimates from two or three accredited orthopaedic centres on identical implant assumptions, and set them out in one comparison sheet. After that we handle the medical visa invitation, airport reception, FRRO registration, ground-floor accommodation within walking distance of the hospital, and the physiotherapy schedule through to your fitness-to-fly review.
Indicative planning ranges from hospital estimates in Delhi NCR. Your final cost depends on implant selection, comorbidities and length of stay stated in your own written estimate.
