Coronary artery bypass grafting is the single most common reason international patients fly to India. The clinical pathway is standardised, the volumes are high, and the price is published clearly enough that a family can plan a budget before they book a flight. Here is what the numbers actually look like, and what moves them.
What a bypass costs in India versus other destinations
The gap is not explained by a difference in implants or in surgeon training — many senior Indian cardiac surgeons trained or practised in the UK and US. It is explained by lower fixed costs, very high procedure volumes at individual centres, and the absence of an insurance billing layer.

Typical package inclusions
A cardiac package is priced around an assumed pathway. Read the estimate as a projection with named assumptions rather than a fixed price.
- Surgeon, anaesthetist, perfusionist and operating theatre charges
- A stated number of ICU days, usually three, and ward days, usually five to seven
- Routine post-operative investigations, in-hospital medication and dressings

What is excluded and what moves the final bill
Almost every case that ends above its estimate does so for one of the reasons below. Ask the hospital to price each of them as a per-unit rate so you can model the downside before you travel.
- ICU days beyond the packaged number, charged per day
- Intra-aortic balloon pump or extended ventilation support
- Managing a pre-existing condition found at workup: uncontrolled diabetes, renal impairment, carotid disease
- Blood products and second-line antibiotics
- Accommodation, food and local transport for the attendant during the recovery weeks
Week-by-week recovery and when you can fly
The recovery clock matters more to a travel budget than the surgical price, because it decides how many nights you pay for outside the hospital.

Choosing the hospital, not just the price
Ask each hospital for its annual CABG volume, the named surgeon's own case volume, whether the operation is off-pump or on-pump and why, and its reported infection rate. A centre doing several hundred bypasses a year with a dedicated cardiac ICU is a materially different proposition from one doing a few dozen, even at the same price.
Accreditation is the floor, not the ceiling. NABH is the Indian national standard and JCI is the international one; both tell you the systems are audited, neither tells you the surgeon's individual record.
